The Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a worldwide Institute of Consecrated Life of Roman Catholic men, who are sometimes known as the Resurrection Fathers, Resurrection Brothers, or Resurrection Deacons, as their life within the congregation is fulfilled in one of these three positions: priest, brother or permanent deacon. The congregation was founded in 1836 Paris by Bogdan Jański, Peter Semenenko and Hieronim Kajsiewicz, at a time when many Polish religious people had emigrated from Poland due to persecution. Jański is recognized as the congregation's principle founder, while Father Semenenko became a leader and guide in matters of the Rule and of the spirit of the congregation; formulating, elaborating and defending the original aim of Jański. Members of the congregation profess vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The congregation declared its intention to follow the advice of Pope Pius IX to "organize yourselves in a way that will do the most good for the Church." The congregation is divided into three provinces and one region, active in more than twelve countries around the world, including Austria, Belarus, Bermuda, Brazil, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the United States. One of the chief missions of the congregation is to provide and to improve religious education, as part of its general charism of working together for the resurrection of society. Related religious organizations include the Resurrection Sisters, also known as the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection, founded in 1891, and the Friends of the Congregation of the Resurrection, a lay ministry whose members support the mission of the Resurrectionist Family. The patron saints of the Resurrectionist Family are Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and guardian of Jesus, and Saint Cajetan, the patron of the unemployed and of all those seeking work.
