Devotion to the Sacred Heart, or the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (and often Mary) is one of the most widely used devitions in the Catholic Church, taking the physical heart of Jesus as the representation of His divine love for humanity. In 1353, Pope Innocent VI instituted a Mass honoring the mystery of the Sacred Heart. Consequently, several Catholic religious congregations or orders employ the use of "sacred heart" within their title. Although most of these institutions are otherwise unrelated, for the sake of convenience and categorization, we will list them within this category, or as subcategories of this category, particularly since several of the names are very similar. Included here are the Society of the Sacred Heart (Religious of the Sacred Heart) and the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, both founded in 1800, as well as the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1821. The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary was founded in 1850, and the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart was established in 1854. In 1866, the Sisters Servants of the Sacred Heart began. 1874 brought the Little Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the Sick and Poor, and the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded in 1877. The following year (1878) came the Priests of the Sacred Heart. The Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts were founded in 1894, and the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary was founded in 1903. In 1997, the Order of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary was established. Others, such as the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Hearts are listed in the Carmelites category, and Saint Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart is categorized under the Josephites. Some of these Catholic institutes have several websites and will be listed in subcategories of their own. For smaller institutes, for which there are only a few websites, those sites will be listed directly beneath this category.
