The term, Evangelical Lutheran Church, can refer to several Lutheran denominations and bodies around the world, although many of them were formed as a result of the missionary efforts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or its predecessors.
Although the ELCA was formed in 1988, it came about through a consolidation of the American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and has its roots in the first Lutheran synod in Noth America.
There is also the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
Besides the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the other ELC bodies are differentiated by country or region, for the most part.
In South America, there is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina, Brazil, and Columbia, as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile, Ecuador, Suriname, and Venezuela.
Germany has several ELC bodies, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, Brunswick, Northern Germany, Oldenburg, Thuringia, and Württemberg, as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, Mecklenburg, Saxony, and Schaumburge-Lippe, the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church and the North Albian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
In Europe, there is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ingia, Latvia, and Sweden, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in France, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Russia and Other States, as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church - Synod of France and Belgium, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession, Kisač.
Elsewhere, there is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, the Church of the Faroe Islands, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana, the Evangelical Lutheran Church Guyana, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong, Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
The focus of this category and its subcategories is on denominations and other church bodies identified as Evangelical Lutheran Churches, wherever they may be. Appropriate topics are any of these bodies, or others not mentioned here, as long as there is an English-language version of the site. Websites representing local congregations should be listed in the appropriate Local & Global category, however.
