Founded by Thomas D. Jakes, Potter's House, in Dallas, Texas, is one of the largest mega-churches in the United States.
Jakes began his ministry in a storefront in West Virginia but, in 1996, he purchased the former Eagles Nest Family Church in the Oak Cliff region of Dallas, next to Dallas Baptist University, relaunching it as the Potter's House. Jakes moved from West Virginia with fifty families, who formed the core of his church. By 2000, he expanded the facility with a 191,000 square-foot sanctuary, paying off the $45 million debt in four years. The sanctuary can seat up to 7,600 people and is used for non-church events as well, such as graduations, concerts, and corporate events.
Typically, Jakes holds three services each Sunday and has an attendance of more than 23,000, seated in the sanctuary and overflow room, as well as his large television audience.
In 2010, the church had a membership of 30,000, and campuses in Dallas, Frisco (North Dallas), and Fort Worth, as well as one in Denver, Colorado, and another in Los Angeles, California. Each of his campuses is linked by satellite video.
T.D. Jakes is a prominent African-American Pentecostal preacher, best known for his cable television broadcasts, but his membership is inter-racial, with large ministries to the homeless, addicted, and convict communities.
His message blends spirituality and economics, and Potter's House employs people in positions of information technology, finance, human resources, materials distribution, public relations, publications, and television production. The church operates a non-profit corporation set up to encourage and facilitate economic growth in underserved communities, another that provides assistance former inmates needing housing, employment, education, or health care, and a school and housing project for single families and seniors, as well as other community and individual assistance programs.
The church also sends missionaries to Mexico and overseas, including Belize, Guyana, and Kenya.
Topics related to the Potter's House or any of its campuses, T.D. Jakes, or other leaders associated with the church, or of any of its affiliated programs, ministries, organizations, or corporations are appropriate topics for this category.
