According to New Age beliefs, an aura is a colored emanation that cloaks the body of a human being, animal, or object, similar to a halo.

Some New Age practitioners claim to be able to see the color, size, and type of vibration of an aura. In New Age medicine, the aura is believed to be a hidden part of the human anatomy that affects the health of a patient in various ways and is believed by some to contain the vital force of a human being, known as the chakra.

As with many other New Age beliefs, the idea of auras began with another spiritual movement. Charles Webster Leadbeater, a member of the Theosophical Society, insisted that he had the ability to determine the evolutionary stage of a person through the individual's aura. He also reconstructed the Tantric concept of chakras, mixing them with some of his own ideas. Rudolph Steiner and Edgar Cayce built on these, adding their own interpretations.

This was later incorporated into New Age ideas, losing much of its Hindu and theosophical roots in the process. Several New Age books discuss links between chakras, aura colors, illnesses, personality traits, and Christian sacraments, and various holistic healers claim to use aura reading techniques, like bioenergetic analysis, spiritual energy, and energy medicine.

There have also been attempts to capture the human aura through photography. One such process actually began long before New Age spirituality. Known as Kirlian photography, it was named for Semyon Kirlian, who discovered, in 1939, that if an object on a photographic plate is connected to an electrical source, an image is produced on the photographic plate. In 1992, Guy Coggins created a software program that uses biofeedback data to color the picture of a subject.

One New Age practitioner describes eleven types of auras.

The general aura is seen in about fifty percent of the population, and is influenced by the rationality of a person.

Another type of aura is known as a shamanic aura, seen in people who are settled in the spine, and whose emotional reactions are influenced by the spine. Most shamans emit this type of aura, but not everyone with a shamanic aura is a shaman. Most people who have a shamanic aura enjoy nature and spend time in nature.

A clinic aura looks like a helmet on the head, with the aura radiating outward. This is the aura that people have after a clinical death. Those who survive clinical death often remain in contact with the spirit world, although they may not be aware of it.

The iron man aura sometimes occurs after the clinical death of someone who has great physical stamina. The radiation goes inside to the brain, rather than outward, as in a clinical aura.

A person with a tulku lama aura is seen in those who are very well developed spiritually, such as a Buddha. When viewed properly, a tulku lama appears as a halo.

An abdominal aura includes two similar auras, the first a cone, and the second a cone and pipes, beginning at the body and extending away. Between them, there is no aura. The abdominal aura is commonly seen in veterinarians, doctors, nurses, and animal lovers.

A ganglia aura consists of spheres, that look like soap bubbles, about the size of a soccer ball, and often overlapping. People with ganglia auras are often those, like entomologists, who are interested in insects. Healers often have this type of aura, but not everyone who has this type of aura is a healer.

A cell aura appears like rows of small, sphere-shaped auras that emanates from the body.

A cerebellar aura is seen in individuals who are settled in the cerebellum. This type of aura looks like rays coming out from the cerebellum, leading in all directions. For some reason, this type of aura is often seen in Jewish people.

Disk auras are rare. They are similar to ganglia auras but appear in the shape of a disk rather than a sphere. People with disk auras are settled in the periosteum.

Lastly, are the cosmic auras. Astronauts who have been in orbit for more than four months will often have their auras changed to a cosmic aura. It appears to be a mixture of all of the other auras together. Another form of cosmic aura might be seen in people whose mothers were hyperactive during pregnancy.

Auras, as used by New Age practitioners, are the focus of sites listed in this category.
