Roller skating is a recreational activity or sport that involves gliding over a smooth surface using roller skates, which are shoes or boots fitted with wheels.

Roller skating can be done recreationally, competitively, or as a mode of transportation. There are different styles, including artistic skating, speed skating, and roller derby. Whether cruising through the park or perfecting tricks at the rink, roller skating is an enjoyable way to stay active while mastering balance and coordination.

Artistic skating, with its focus on choreographed routines and expressive movement, reveals the sport's artistic side, often aiming to interpret music and emotion through graceful transitions and carefully balanced spins. Speed skating, on the other hand, turns the activity into a contest of endurance, technique, and physics, where every fraction of a second counts as skaters compete on oval tracks or urban courses. Roller derby is a contact sport characterized by a fast-paced, full-contact competition.

The origins of roller skating go back to the 18th century when John Joseph Merlin invented an early prototype. Although others worked on early designs as well, Merlin is credited with creating the first roller skate. Over time, these early models were improved, from primitive leather designs to the more sophisticated, multi-wheel products used today.

Typically, a roller skate consists of a boot that wraps snugly around the foot for support, with wheels attached in two or more pairs mounted on a frame. The design of these skates has undergone continual evolution to enhance their stability and performance. For example, artistic skates are designed with a focus on balance and maneuverability, while speed skates prioritize streamlined design and reduced weight for speed.

As roller skating grew in popularity and various disciplines or styles emerged, organizations were formed to advocate for and regulate the sport. Some of these include Roller Skating Association International, the Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America, American Roller Sports, USA Roller Sports, National Roller Sports Association, Roller Sports Canada, Our Family Skate Association, and World Skate, to name a few.

Today, the popularity of roller skating styles ebbs and flows with cultural trends. Nostalgic revivals of artistic and recreational skating have gained traction in many urban centers, while roller derby continues to grow as a non-conformist sport, and speed skating remains a popular competitive discipline within certain circles.

While not as well-known as many other sports and recreational activities, roller skating offers a blend of nostalgia and innovation that continues to find new enthusiasts.
