Blissfield is an incorporated village in Lenawee County, situated mostly in Blissfield Township, with portions of the village extending into Palmyra and Riga townships.
The southern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula was settled by European-Americans earlier than the rest of the state. William Kedzie was the first to make a government land purchase in the area that was to become Blissfield in May of 1824, although he didn't settle there until the fall of 1826. Hervey Bliss bought land there in June of 1824, moving onto it the following December, thus becoming the first permanent settler.
When Blissfield Township was organized in 1827, it was named for Hervey Bliss, who also became the postmaster of the village by that name on March 28, 1838. Around that time, Blissfield became a station on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1875.
At one time, Blissfield was home to the only set of Triple Bridges in the world. Crossing the River Raisin, the three bridges were directly next to one another, and included a railroad bridge and two vehicular bridges, the latter two of which were later replaced with one.
Three Blissfield properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Blissfield Downtown Historic District, the David Carpenter House, and the First Presbyterian Church of Blissfield.
The village is broken up into three non-contiguous sections, with two industrial regions added to the village limits in the southeast, one on each side of US-223.
US Highway 223 (Adrian Street) serves as the main route through the village. Secondary routes include Beamer Road (Walnut Street), Berkley Highway (Lane Street), Driggs Road (Beagle Road), Gorman Road (Monroe Street), Ricker Highway Silberthorn Highway, and Wellsville Highway. The village of Deerfield is 8.4 miles northeast, the city of Adrian is 11.7 miles northwest, and Petersburg is 12.3 miles northeast of Blissfield.
