The Bronx is the borough which is geographically furthest north. It is situated in Bronx County. The most recently formed borough, the Bronx is the only one which is located entirely on the mainland. It was named in honor of Swedish sea captain Jonas Bronck, the first European settler in the area, having first been called "Bronck's River" or "Bronck's Land." The name of the borough is prepended by the definite article "The".
