The World Apostolate of Fátima is an international association of Catholics formed to promote the authentic teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, and the strict adherence to the Gospel, the sanctification of adherents through faithful adherence to the Message of Fátima, and the promotion of the common good by spreading the Message of Fátima. Originally known as the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fátima, the organization was founded by Father Harold V. Colgan, parish priest of Saint Mary of Plainfield, New Jersey. Father Colgan had fallen ill and, from his hospital bed, he prayed to Our Lady of Fátima, promising to spend the remainder of his life spreading devotion to her if she would cure him. He attributed his recovery to these prayers, and sought to deliver on his promise, preaching to his congregation daily about the Virgin Mary. He encouraged Catholics to devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, daily recitation of the Rosary, and righteous observance of the duties of one's state of life. He added a signed promise that one would try to uphold these values, and to wear a blue ribbon or blue medal in order to remember the promise. His congregation enrolled, and Father Colgan began thinking about extending this to other parishes and nations. His was to be the Blue Army of Mary and Christ, against the red of the world and of Satan. Pope Pius XII approved his project to extend these teachings beyond his own parish. The Blue Army was established in 1947, and became the World Apostolate of Fátima in 2005. The international headquarters of the World Apostolate of Fátima is in the Domus Pacis (House of Peace)m a pilgrim guest house in Fátima, Portugal. The Apostolate is divided into prayer cells in parishes throughout the world, which fall under state and national Apostolate centers, which in turn report to the International Secretariat in Fátima. There are several pilgrim statues to Fátima, but the primary one has traveled the world several times.
