Munzee is an interactive scavenger hunt game where players search for QR codes hidden in various real-world locations.

Munzee is a modern scavenger hunt that blends digital innovation with real-world adventure. It originated in 2008, when Aaron Benzick envisioned a game that would leverage emerging smartphone technology to transform the traditional scavenger hunt. As this concept predated the availability of embedding QR codes into everyday objects, it wasn't until July 1, 2011, that Benzick and co-founders Scott Foster, Chris Pick, and Josh Terkelsen were able to launch the game for the first time in McKinney, Texas.

The original vision involved using poker chips or rounded coins imprinted with QR codes, an idea inspired by the German münze, meaning "coin." Since the ideal domain name was unavailable, an extra "e" was added, giving the game its distinctive name.

At its core, Munzee is a location-based scavenger hunt where players use their smartphones, equipped with GPS and a dedicated Munzee application, to search for and capture hidden QR-coded stickers known as Munzees. These game pieces are strategically deployed in parks, city streets, and remote natural settings. When players discover a Munzee, they scan the QR code with their device, thus recording the capture and awarding points to the finder and the person who deployed it.

In addition to the physical Munzees, the game also features virtual Munzees that players can capture simply by being in close proximity to designated GPS coordinates. This dual approach to gameplay encourages physical activity and real-world discovery and infuses digital elements, such as rankings, clan wars, and themed challenges.

The game's appeal is further enhanced by the diverse array of game pieces available to players. The most iconic is the "Greenie," the standard physical Munzee that started it all. Over time, the game has introduced several other types to increase strategy and excitement. For example, "Owned" and "Captured" markings help players track their milestones, while "Maintenance" Munzees indicate temporarily unavailable game pieces. Meanwhile, "Mystery" Munzees offer an unexpected twist by awarding random points, and "Premium" Munzees (available through special memberships) provide a coveted target. The continually expanding inventory of Munzees ensures that no two Munzee hunts are alike.

From its origins in a Texas town, Munzee quickly spread, becoming an internationally recognized game. Physical QR-coded Munzees are deployed on every continent, including Antarctica. The game's freemium model, combined with its continuous updates and engaging social elements like clan wars and community events, has powered its spread.

Although unrelated, Munzee includes elements of geocaching and Pokémon Go. All three encourage outdoor activity and exploration, fostering community, with players often collaborating and sharing their experiences. Each of these games uses technology to search for something, whether through QR codes, GPS coordinates, or augmented reality.

The primary differences are in the mechanics of the gameplay and the objectives. Munzee focuses on the strategic placement and capture of QR codes, making it more about tactical thinking and planning. Geocaching emphasizes the thrill of the hunt and the joy of discovery, strongly focusing on finding physical containers. Pokémon Go, on the other hand, blends AR with the Pokémon universe, offering a visually engaging experience that appeals to fans of the franchise.
