Shaving is not universal. Many cultures consider a beardless man to be effeminate. Even in western society certain professions use beards to indicate rank. This is true to some extent in academia. Men shave to retain a youthful look. Also certain fashionable ways of shaving can denote an historial period. Muttonchops make one think of the late 1800’s. Many males who came of age in the 60′ and 70’s still retain a mustache. I have no idea what Frank Zappa was thinking of with his under the lip hair.
